Criterion® Online Writing Evaluation Service is currently being used by the 7th and 8th grades at BLSMMA. Soon, 6th grade will be using it also.
Criterion® is an on line program that allows teachers to establish a writing “prompt” in a particular genre (narrative, short story, etc). It also allows the teacher to establish a time span for children to work on the essay. Students write from the prompt, either in free style or after making a plan. Before a session is over, the student “submits” their essay and immediately gets feedback on the mechanics and style of their writing.
Immediate feedback allows for improved student performance. Reports can be generated for the teachers to observe and use for assessment purposes.
The 6th, 7th and 8th grades will be completing their Writing Assessment on Criterion in April. This will the first time for it to be completed this way.
