Student Organization

Bishop Leonard Saint Mary of the Mount Academy provides many opportunities for students to participate in activities that promote academic, leadership, teamwork, and spiritual growth.

The following is a list of current activities. Students and Parents can submit ideas for a new club at any time. One requirement is to have a parent monitor to over see the club. The monitor must have clearances on file and also must have attended a Protecting God’s Children presentation.

Cub Scouts

CubMaster – Mr. Derek Riley
Cub Scouts at BLSMMA is a curriculum based program that has Cub Scout leaders coming into the school to teach the programs to our students. Boys in Grades One through Five attend class weekly to learn the great character developed attributes of what it takes to earn a Cub Scout Badge. Students at BLSMMA are chartered to Unit # 254. This program continues year to year for the students.

Band

Teacher –  Miss Bethany Racke
Any student who is interested in being part of the Bishop Leonard Saint Mary of the Mount Academy Band is welcome to join. Beginner Band is for first year players, and Advanced Band is for students who have been playing more than one year. Each band meets once a week and students also receive group lessons once a week, both during school time. BLSMMA students team up with other school bands to perform a Christmas Concert and a Spring Concert.

Junior Achievement

Bishop Canevin High School Students
Junior Achievement is a worldwide organization that teaches a variety of work readiness, entrepreneurship, and financial literacy skills in schools. Students from Bishop Canevin High School teach the JA’s business skills to all students at BLSMMA, from Kindergarten through Eighth Grade.

Fine Arts

The Fine Arts program is vital to all students. Students have the opportunity to deepen their awareness of God’s gift of creation and to respond creatively to the beauty and goodness of the world through music, art and drama. Instruction in the Arts contributes to the development of the whole person; promotes individual expression; allows experimentation with diverse materials and elements; enables exploration and appreciation of the works of other students, major artists, and musicians; develops an awareness and sensitivity toward the environment and finally promotes a deeper understanding of heritage and culture.

Math 24

Teachers –  Many Faculty Members
Math 24 is a popular game that uses Math skills for problem solving. The object of the game is to make the number 24 using the four numbers on a game card. You can add, subtract, multiply and divide. Each number may only be used once. There are three levels of difficulty. This game builds strong mental-mathematics and problem-solving skills, helps improve test scores and sharpens concentration.

Art Club

Teacher –  Mrs. Kathy Mancuso
The Art Club meets one day per week and allows for children who have an interest in art to participate and experiment at a higher level of artistic ability. Many different dynamics of art will be used for the creative students to learn.

Newspaper

The Newspaper Club began last year and gives students an opportunity to become journalists. The club meets each Thursday. Topics include, but are not limited to, poetry, sports, “What’s Happening”, comics, and much more. A full color newspaper is for sale at the end of each month. Money is donated to a charity of the clubs choice.

Yearbook Club

Teacher – Mrs. Nicole Banko
The Yearbook Club is a student based activity lead by the 8th Grade. Students are responsible for the design and implementation of a particular section for the up-coming yearbook. Students are responsible for taking photos, designing pages, collecting data, and distribution.

Forensics

The BLSMMA Forensics Team consists of students in grades 6-8 who compete in five categories that include; Poetry, Prose, Declamation, Impromptu, and Drama. The club promotes the study of public discussion and debate, fostering public speaking skills. To prepare for the competitions, the students practice afterschool and at lunch (when needed).

Spelling Bee

Practicing spelling words for the end of the year Diocesan Spelling Bee is what this club is all about.  Students practice one time during the week after school, and extra hard at home!  A school wide Spelling Bee is held at BLSMMA and the overall winner moves on to compete against all of the other studnet winners from Diocesan schools.
